No matter where you find yourself in the economic scale – from a single parent in a low wage job, a student, or a well compensated professional – you want a safe place where your child will be cared for during the day while you work or go to school.
Now imagine there is a place that will keep your child safe while you’re away, provide an accredited early learning program, two hot meals and two snacks a day, and will charge you only what you can afford. There is just such a place — Christina Kent Early Childhood Center!
We empower young working families by keeping child care affordable while providing an exceptional educational program emphasizing the child’s innate interest in learning and focusing on school readiness.
Christina Kent Early Childhood Center (CKECC) is licensed by the State of New Mexico and is accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). It is ranked as a 5-Star Center, the highest ranking for an early childhood center licensed through New Mexico Children, Youth, and Families (CYFD).
As an NAEYC accredited center, all Lead Teachers have a CDA, AA, or Bachelors Degree in working with the young child. All Assistants have taken the 45-hour training recommended by the New Mexico Department of Children, Youth, and Families. All staff members, including the cook, have current CPR and Pediatric first aid certification. Each year teachers and administrators complete 24 hours of continuing education, much of which is provided through in-service workshops.
Location, Hours and Schedule
Located at the northwest corner of Third and Coal Streets SW, Christina Kent Early Childhood Center is convenient for parents who work downtown or families who live nearby. Our doors are open from 7:30 AM to 5:30 PM Monday through Friday.
We are a year-round school and observe all Federal holidays. The Center is closed between December 25 and January 2.
Capacity and Age Range
Christina Kent Early Childhood Center has a capacity of 65 students and accepts children between two and five years of age. Children do not have to be potty trained.
Tuition and Funding
Christina Kent Early Childhood Center’s tuition is calculated on a sliding scale based on gross family income. Families must provide proof of income to qualify for subsidized enrollment. Our funding comes from parent tuition, State Tuition Assistance, NM PreK, Bernalillo County, CACFP (Federal Food Program), and United Way, as well as Fund Development through events, grants, and private donations.
Christina Kent Early Childhood Center participates in the USDA Child and Adult Care Food Program. We serve breakfast, lunch, and an afternoon snack. Children delight in the assortment of colorful, nutritious food and the social experience of dining together family style. They participate in setting the table, cleaning up after meals, and in monthly nutrition projects in each classroom. Our cook has been with the Center for over eleven years and takes pride in presenting balanced, attractive meals for our children.
Classrooms and Teacher Ratios
Christina Kent has three classrooms, organized by age. Each classroom has a Lead Teacher and several assistant teachers. (See Accreditation)
The Curriculum is thoughtfully designed to consider the interests of the children in each class. Studies and projects connect the “whole child” to the world as teacher and child learn together. This integrated approach to building curriculum is age appropriate and supports every aspect of a child’s development.
Classes play outdoors several times a day under teacher supervision. Our north play area for the two year old Bunnies is separate from the larger play area so the toddlers can enjoy age-appropriate activities for their group.
Three and four year old Teddies and Busy Bees use the larger play area equipped with a sandbox, slides, play structures, tricycles (with bike helmets) and a shade structure. During the plant growing season, children help to tend and monitor garden areas, which the teachers use for outdoor classroom activities. See Outdoor Classroom plans.
Our helpful staff is available Monday through Friday to answer all of your questions. We look forward to speaking with you.
